Apple Profits and the Numbers Game

by James R. Stoup Jul 14, 2005

If you go over to Mac Daily News you will find several news briefs that detail Apple’s 3rd quarter financial results. All in all they did good. Really good. Like, they blew their estimates out of the water and made considerably more money than anyone predicted. Cool huh? Well, here comes the amusing part, I keep seeing analysts trying to put a negative spin on the reports. But they come up with the stupidist things. Crazy crap like:

“Year-on-year, iPod shipments rose 620 per cent, but revenue only increased 340 per cent.” ~ Damn, only 340%, I guess they are screwed now.

On Apple’s year over year growth in excess of 500% “It is unsustainable.” ~ More from the bleeding obvious, sun is hot, water is wet, Michael Jackson still nuts.

On the fact that Apple has posted its highest earnings ever and sales of EVERYTHING are up “It’s a mixed bag” ~ Huh? What is the bad part of this announcement?

Anyway, it all seems to boil down to this, Apple is set to double the number of Macs it normally sells. Sales of iPods are continuing to increase though not at the insane rates at which they have been. Apple is making money on everything they touch and they project that they will make even more money before the year is out. So I guess if I was an investor I wouldn’t be too worried yet.

Random Thoughts

The train bombing in London horrible and I was glad to see that there were many survivors. I found a very funny quote that I thought I would share with everybody:

When the news reporter said “Shopkeepers are opening their doors bringing out blankets and cups of tea” I just smiled. It’s like yes. That’s Britain for you. Tea solves everything. You’re a bit cold? Tea. Your boyfriend has just left you? Tea. You’ve just been told you’ve got cancer? Tea. Coordinated terrorist attack on the transport network bringing the city to a grinding halt? TEA DAMMIT! And if it’s really serious, they may bring out the coffee. The Americans have their alert raised to red, we break out the coffee. That’s for situations more serious than this of course. Like another England penalty shoot-out.

Well, it made me smile.

Oh yeah, and the whole Oprah was turned away at the door in the fancy shop in Paris was just too funny. I mean, she shows up at the store 15 min. after they are closed and can’t figure out why they won’t let her in. Then, when they tell her they are hosting a private event and thus can’t let her enter she calls them racists. Duh.

But on the upside of things I really enjoyed the Fantastic 4 movie. Not nearly as good as Batman Begins but still very cool.
