April 29, 2002: A G4 for Education…ONLY!
The G4 iMac had been out for a few months and was getting great reviews. People loved the LCD and more capable processor. On the other hand, at $1,299, it was beyond the reach of many users. Sure, Apple still made relatively low cost iMacs in the original form factor but then users had to settle for the G3 chip.
What many wanted was an original iMac with a G4 inside. The loss of the LCD, the users reasoned, would be more than offset by the lower price. Apple listened to users' demands carefully and promptly ignored them.
Their ears weren't quite as deaf to the education market. The new iMac wasn't considered sturdy or cheap enough to satisfy the grubby paws of primary school students so Apple came up with the eMac. The screen was two inches larger than the original Mac while the industrial design retained the bulbous shape users had come to know and love. People could finally get their hands on a low cost G4 on April 29, 2002... That is, if you qualified as an educational user.

That’s an odd request. I admit I was disappointed by the G4 iMac with the G3. I needed something like eMac to learn for a truck driving school Phoenix has. I’m in touch with my educational side, does that count for a low cost G4?
